Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
Powerful stories. While I can get really emotional/passionate about equal rights for everyone, I appreciated the respectful tone this film took to both sides of the issue. The focus of the film was on the relationships between believing family members, many of whom struggled as they learned to accept their son or daughter who was gay. I love how the film tells their story, not through voice-overs or flashy storytelling, but by allowing each family to express their reactions and relationships using their own words.
I've said this before, but the issue of equal rights for homosexuals is THE civil rights movement of our day.
It's well worth the watch, and I'm looking forward to some discussions with some of you in the future about what's in this film. I'll bring the DVD, you'll supply the popcorn!
[EDIT: Hmm, looks like the above links were taken down. I suppose you'll have to rent or come by my place and watch my copy! Until then, here's one of my favorite bits from the film:]
It looks awesome! But the videos you linked to aren't working. Are these on You Tube?
