| Jesus, the ultimate freethinker? |
Baby woke me up from a deep sleep a little while ago, and since I had all these ideas swimming around in my head, I figured it was better to come downstairs and type 'em out, rather than have them all go to waste.
Earlier this week there was a letter to the editor in reaction to September's Blasphemy Day. Here's my response to it -- we'll see if it gets published!
Glenda Lee's letter to the editor earlier this week ("Seek real freethinker") revealed someone who obviously did not read the article on September's Blasphemy Day, but instead reacted in offense to it. Perhaps she missed the several lines in the article where it described some of the impetus behind having such a day. I participated in the day's activities not only to have some ribbing fun at organized religious dogma, but more importantly to stress the need to have internationally-protected freedoms to being able to be critical of such ideologies.
If Jesus was the genuine freethinker who Lee touts, a man who supposedly welcomed questions and critiques of the Christian faith, then you'd think he would advocate such a day as Blasphemy Day, too.
That said, Lee's evangelistic altar call at the end of her letter is especially amusing. Perhaps she's confusing touting Jesus's "freethought" attributes with his more prevalent "fearthought" qualities -- did she forget that Jesus was one of the loudest voices in the New Testament to promote the destination of hell for nonbelievers? As far as I know, a freethinker wouldn't advocate eternal punishment for questioning nonbelievers like me.
